Solar-Ready Roofs: Replace the Roof Before the Panels Go On

Solar panels last a long time, and so should the roof under them. If solar might be in your future, we can prepare your new roof for it now — so you're not tearing panels off later to replace a roof that wore out first.

Included

What's included

  • A new asphalt shingle roof, built with the panels' long life in mind
  • Roof deck checked, with soft or rotted boards replaced
  • Layout planned around where panels would likely go
  • Vents and pipes kept clear of the best solar areas where possible
  • Documentation of your roof you can share with a solar installer

Why it matters

Solar panels are typically expected to last for decades. If the roof underneath is already halfway through its life, you could end up paying to remove and reinstall panels just to replace the shingles. Doing the roof first means one job, done once. We do solar-ready roof replacements in Conshohocken, Blue Bell, Malvern, Paoli and the towns around them.

What “solar-ready” means with us

It’s still a roof first. We install a new asphalt shingle roof the same way as any other replacement. Then we pay extra attention to the things that matter for solar later: a solid deck, a clean layout on the sunniest slopes, and good records of what’s up there.

You choose the solar company and the timing. Our part is the roof, built so it shouldn’t be the weak link.

FAQ

Common questions

Do you install solar panels?

No. We're roofers. We prepare the roof so it's ready when you decide on solar, and you can work with the solar installer of your choice.

Why replace the roof before going solar?

Removing and reinstalling panels to replace a roof later costs extra. If your roof is getting older, it often makes sense to replace it first.

Do solar panels void a roof warranty?

They can, if the installer cuts into the roof without following the shingle manufacturer's rules or the roof wasn't in shape for panels. That's the point of a solar-ready roof: we install to spec and document it, which gives a careful solar crew a sound roof and a record to work from. Whether the warranty holds up still depends on how the mounts are flashed, so ask your solar company how they do it.

Does a solar-ready roof cost more?

It depends on what your roof needs. A solar-ready roof is a normal shingle replacement with the deck, layout and records done with panels in mind, and we'll show you any difference in your quote so you can decide.

What if panels are already on my roof?

Panels have to come off before a roof can be replaced, and taking them down and putting them back is usually the solar company's work, not the roofer's. Talk to your solar company about that first, then book the roof. Not sure the roof needs replacing yet? A free inspection will tell you.
